In the Yoga Sūtras, Patañjali writes, heyaṁ duḥkham anāgatam (II.16)
“Pains that are dormant may manifest at a later time and can be prevented through the regular practice of yoga. The practice of yoga helps also in building up strength and power to endure the pains which cannot be cured.” B.K.S. Iyengar, Core of the Yoga Sūtras
As an art and science, yoga provides the opportunity for mental stability and physical vibrancy. Dedicated practice with adherence to the key principles of Iyengar Yoga – alignment, precision, timing, sequencing, and modifying via props – can also provide for healing and management of certain conditions. Lower back pain is one of the most common and chronic ailments today.
In this workshop, students will:
* Review general anatomy of the spine;
* Learn how to modify basic standing, seated, inverted, and supine āsanas in order to promote low back health and manage pain;
* Practice prānāyāma and passive poses which can help to create quietness and ease tension; and
* Receive a home practice sequence tailored to those with lower back pain.
Eligibility: Limited to students of Iyengar Yoga. This course is suitable for beginner students, but not for those completely new to yoga. Those with acute injuries are not eligible.
